Shell – the calcareous external skeleton of shells. In the cross-section of the shell, three distinct layers can be distinguished: the outer conchiolin layer – periostracum, the middle porcelain layer – ostracum and the inner pearl layer – hypostracum, made up of numerous small calcareous lamellae. The mother-of-pearl can also be deposited by the mantle around particles, such as grains of sand, that get inside the shell. Then regular lumps of mother-of-pearl – pearls – are usually formed.
