Topaz – a mineral of the silicate cluster, widespread in many parts of the world.The name comes from the Greek topázios (to seek) and refers to the orange-gold color and brilliance of the precious varieties of this mineral. It forms columnar, almost isometric crystals, also barrel-shaped. It occurs in clustered, granular columnar and rod-shaped clusters. It is brittle and transparent, characterized by a great variety of colors. It is a very hard, heavy and rare mineral.
Depending on its color, formation and origin, it is sometimes referred to by various regional, customary, trade and gemological names: t. sherry, hyacinth, t. imperial, t. noble, t. siberian, t. safiras, t. royal, t. Peredell, t. taurida, Brazilian sapphire, water sapphire, Brazilian ruby, slave diamond, pycnite.
