Petrified wood – is formed by being buried deep underground in sediment. The color of the stone is influenced by minerals that have penetrated into the wood during the petrification process. Despite the fact that the material ceases to be wood, it retains its drawing representing the texture of a tree.Petrified wood belongs to the group of chalcedony, the hardness is 7 on the Mosh scale.
The largest deposits of petrified wood in Poland are located near Kwaczała and Regulice near Krakow.
