Topaz— a mineral belonging to the silicate group, found in many regions of the world.The name derives from the Greek (topázios) = “to seek” and refers to the orange-gold color and luster of the precious varieties of this mineral. It forms prismatic crystals, nearly isometric, as well as barrel-shaped ones. It occurs in compact, granular, prismatic, and rod-like aggregates. It is brittle and transparent, characterized by an immense variety of colors. It is a very hard, heavy, and rare mineral.
Depending on its color, form, and origin, it is known by various regional, common, commercial, and gemmological names: Sherry sapphire, hyacinth, Imperial sapphire, noble sapphire, Siberian sapphire, safiras, royal tourmaline, Peredell tourmaline, Taurida tourmaline, Brazilian sapphire, water sapphire, Brazilian ruby, slave’s diamond, and pyknite.
