Rhodochrosite

Rhodochrosite – gemstone

Rhodochrosite is a rare mineral classified as a carbonate. The name of this mineral comes from two Greek words: “rhodon” (rose) and “chroma” (color), referring to the color of rhodochrosite stones. Sometimes it can be found under other names such as diagolite, manganese spar, or Inca rose. The largest deposits of rhodochrosite are found in Argentina and the USA, but it is also mined in South Africa, Chile, Germany, Mexico, Peru, and Romania. Rhodochrosite mineral is primarily found in hydrothermal veins. Sometimes it occurs as a by-product, mined alongside silver. Characteristic features of rhodochrosite include uneven, conchoidal fracture, perfect cleavage in all directions, and a trigonal crystallographic system. Rhodochrosite is relatively soft, with a hardness of 3.5-4.5 on the Mohs scale, and a density of 3.45-3.7 g/cm³.
