Peridot
Peridot – a jewelry stone
Peridot is a gemstone that is a precious variety of olivine and belongs to the group of silicates. Sometimes it can also be found under the name chrysolite or simply olivine. Its name comes from the French word “peritot,” which means impure (referring to the numerous impurities of other minerals in the structure of peridot) or from the Arabic word “faridat,” which means jewelry stone. Peridot is a rarely occurring mineral. Peridot mineral can be found in countries such as the USA, Brazil, Burma, Australia, Kenya, South Africa, or at the bottom of the Red Sea. Peridot stone contains inclusions of other minerals such as ilmenite, chromite, magnetite, or chromian spinel. Among the characteristic features of this mineral are shell-like and brittle fracture, distinct cleavage, and rhombic crystallographic system. The hardness of this mineral on the Mohs scale is 6.5-7, and the density is 3.2–4.3 g/cm³. Interestingly, peridot was found in samples of cosmic dust from the Stardust probe, so it is not a mineral occurring only on Earth.

Peridot – color, price
Peridot stones mainly occur in yellowish-green and olive colors, but they can also be found in other colors such as brownish-green, green-black, or black-brown. The intensity of green in peridot is determined by the amount of iron in its structure. It is estimated that for peridot to achieve the perfect green color, it should not contain more than 15% iron. Due to its color, natural peridot is sometimes mistaken for emerald. A characteristic feature of peridot is pleochroism, which is variable and depends on the iron content and impurities of other minerals. Like other jewelry stones, the price of peridot depends primarily on the clarity of the stone, its color, and cut. In our natural gemstones store, you will find faceted peridots and peridot cabochons at an affordable price.
