Howlite
Howlite – natural stone
Howlite is rare mineral belonging to the group of silicates. Howlite mineral can be found, among others, in the USA, Turkey, Canada or Germany. Its name comes from the XIX-century mineralogist and chemist Henry’ How, who first discovered and described this mineral. Howlite is often found in gypsum mines in the company of other minerals from the silicate group. We will meet it in the shape of irregular masses or tumors. The hardness of the howlite on the Mohs scale is 3-3.5, which means that it is not classified as a gemstone. Among the characteristic features of howlite stones we include high porosity, thanks to which the stone is susceptible to dyes and can change color to any other. The density of this mineral is 2,45–2,58 g/cm³. In addition, a characteristic feature of the howlite is a monoclinic crystallographic system, indistinct slate and smooth or granular fracture.

Natural howlite is most often found in white colour with black, gray or brown veins. The most characteristic feature of howlite is its milky white color, which is often interspersed with subtle, marbled patterns. Due to this unique combination, the howlite often resembles fine marble sculptures. Howlite stone is often dyed to imitate other stone– most often it is supposed to imitate turquoise and is then called turkmenite.
