Fossilized Palm

Fossil Palm – natural stone

Fossil palm is the remains of palm trees from distant geological periods, preserved through burial in sediment, and then replaced by minerals such as chalcedony, opal, or quartz from percolating solutions. This process often leads to the preservation of detailed structural features and the original wood structure. The formation of fossil palm takes millions of years and is a specific type of fossilization that occurs through the mineralization of palm trees. When mineral-rich water flows through sediments, it can lead to permineralization, where minerals deposit in the cells and spaces inside the palm. As a result, fossil palm stones are formed. Deposits of fossil palm can be found, among others, in Poland, the USA, Brazil, Thailand, Russia, Indonesia, or Madagascar. The hardness of fossil palm usually ranges from 5 to 7 on the Mohs scale. A characteristic feature of fossil palm is that each stone is unique and one-of-a-kind – there are no two identical specimens.

    Fossil Palm – color, price

Fossil palm stones are characterized by unique patterns and textures, which are the result of minerals filling their structure. The variety of colors of individual stones depends on the mineral inclusions penetrating the silica during the mineralization process. Therefore, fossil palm stone occurs in a wide range of colors, including white, gray, brown, pink, or yellow. The dominant inclusions responsible for these colors are mainly silica, carbon, chromium, magnesium, manganese, and calcium. In our online store, we offer a rich selection of fossil palm stones in the form of flats.

    Fossil Palm – uses

An example of using fossil palm for analyzing climatic history is the study of growth rings variability. In addition, it is also a valuable collector’s stone. In Europe, fossil palm is used as a raw material for producing exclusive furniture, such as sinks or tables. However, fossil palm stones are mainly used to create jewelry, such as necklaces, earrings, or bracelets.
