Amethyst – what is it? What distinguishes it from other minerals?

Chemically, amethyst is silicon dioxide, while geologically, it is a type of quartz, one of the most common minerals on Earth. Among other gemstones, amethyst stands out with its enchanting color, the intensity of which depends on the amount of iron and other trace elements present in it, as well as the effects of sunlight. From light pink, purple, bishop’s purple, heather, lilac, to indigo, amethyst displays a wide range of purple shades. What other characteristics does this mineral have? On the Mohs hardness scale, it scores 7 out of 10, meaning it is hard and resistant to breaking. It can, therefore, withstand intensive processing.

    How to recognize real amethyst?

As mentioned earlier, real amethyst has high resistance to scratching and abrasion – in fact, it is even harder than steel. Therefore, a simple way to check the authenticity of this stone is to gently scratch it with a knife – if a scratch appears on the crystal surface, it means it is fake. Wondering how to recognize real amethyst by color? When placed in a glass of water, the mineral will slightly discolor at the edges. Conversely, artificial stone will have a uniform, intense color across its entire surface.
